Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background

“Miyagi” Tours and Travel is one of the agencies in Yogyakarta. “Miyagi” Tours and Travel is a member of ASITA which stands for Association of the Indonesia Tour & Travel Agency. According to the information from ASITA that this organization has 140 agencies in Yogyakarta and “Miyagi” Tours and Travel is under control of ASITA itself.

“Miyagi” Tours and Travel is also a ticket agent such as flight tickets. The main major why “Miyagi” Tours and Travel was established is to be a place of flight ticket reservation especially tickets for Lion Air.

The Agency of Miyagi also provides some tour packages such as packages in several tourisms place.

1.2  Location

There is no difficulty to reach the location of “Miyagi” Tours and Travel because it lies in a strategic point. The company lies at Jl. MT Haryono No. 79 Yogyakarta. To be clearer, take a look of the map below;

Miyagi Location

1.3  The Internship Purpose

When I am thinking of the purpose of the internship, I directly think about a work world. However, this kind of practice is always related to the work world where everyone who is going to finish his or her study will think about a job.

Performing this job training has a great purpose to the students and also to the university. I will divide into two things of the purpose of performing the job training. The purpose of internship can be very useful for;

  1. Students

I myself can say for sure that doing this job training is an introduction of the real job that I will have in the future. Many things that I have learnt when performing this job training such as welcoming customers who want to buy tickets. The company needs a good attitude to greet them. A good attitude will attract people to come to the company because this becomes a great talk value for them to attract the others.

Performing this job training also makes me stay in the office for about six hours a day. I become to understand how I feel to stay in an office for hours. This is a great moment and training to prepare me for the next time in a real job. What I have felt when performing my job training is actually not enough to make me understand all about a real job but at least, this has been a real training to face a real job itself.

Then, the internship purpose is also a real training of what a student gets from the university. One of the aims of internship is to link theory with practice. The theory has been taught in the university and it is supposed to be applied in a real area and hereby, job training becomes a real area to apply the theory that a student gets from the subject determined.

Here I can summarize the purpose of internship for students;

1)      To provide students with a practical real world experience

2)      To enable students to develop their skill which can not be taught in the class

3)      To enable students to compare theoretical ideas within the real training when performing the job training

4)      To prepare students by doing training in a company as a temporary labor to the real work.

  1. University

Some universities have had a good relationship with some institutes and companies. The companies have allowed the students of university to do their job training as a requirement of a subject. However, not for all companies where the students take job training had a relationship with the university. The purpose of internship for university is a way to promote a university. I am talking about a talk value. The other purpose is to have a good relationship with the university itself.

The talk value will be very useful if the students can show their good performance, skill, attitude, creativity, contribution to the company they are doing job training. This becomes good values for university to increase the reputation of the university itself.

1.4  The Impact of Internship

What I mean the impact here is the influence of what I have got when performing my job training for about 30 days. The impact of internship is very useful because it enables me to have a positive view about the real job in the future. Performing my job training in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel is probably not suitable for my major, English Department. I, however, have to confess that I have new things, knowledge about flight tickets and I must need this knowledge in the future. This is not only about flight ticketing but it is also about the way of booking tickets through online because it is very effective when customers book the tickets through online. This is the impact of internship to the writer.

1.5  The Partnership of “Miyagi” Tours and Travel.

“Miyagi” Tours and Travel does not stand alone as a business in ticketing field. This agency has some partners to increase the growth of the company itself. This business partner has supported each other in terms of selling tickets. The partnership of “Miyagi” Tours and Travel is like “Miranda”, “Nuansa” and “PT. HAROMAS” Tours and Travels. The agencies mostly sell flight tickets and a place of ticket reservation.

Chapter II

The implementation of internship has been performed for about 120 hours started in May 4 until June 6, 2009. The sum of hours is a requirement of the faculty where it is supposed to be performed at least 120 hours.

Here is the table of schedule when performing the job training;

2.2  The Activities

I have recorded what I was doing when performing this job training. There are some activities that are shown to us. Those activities become the point of value to the students that must be performed from day one till final day. There are four activities during job training was performed.

2.2.1        The Matter of Ticket Issued

When the first time I did my job training in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel, I am supposed to know how to issue tickets, flight tickets. I have to do this correctly. This is one of my activities when performing my job training in the company. There are many things that I have to learn such as the meaning of “flight class”, the meaning of cities abbreviation that will be explained in the next chapter and also the accurate names of the customers.

Here is a sample of a ticket issued;

2.2.2        The Place of Payment

The tickets that have been sold in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel must be delivered to BII bank and the payment will be deposited to the bank. The delivery of these tickets is done twice a day at least and the service of tickets delivered will take place from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the payment will be done in Adisucipto Airport.

This is also one of my activities in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel. After delivering the tickets to the BII bank and the ticket management will legalize the tickets and give the receipt where the tickets are actually reserved and paid as well. Here is the sample of receipt below after delivering the tickets and deposited the payment to the bank.

Slip

2.2.3        Ticket Delivery

Beside of delivering tickets to the back and to the airport, there are some persons who reserve the ticket personally and the agent has to be ready to serve them by taking the ticket to the customer address. This is one of “Miyagi” Tours and Travel services in selling tickets.

This has been done because some of them book the ticket through online. By booking online, sometimes means that the ticket reserved must be delivered to the person who books it. This becomes my activity when performing my job training in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel.

2.2.4        Data Input

The other activity that I was doing when performing this job training in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel is to input data. The data is about the cash out-in flow. This has to be recorded where the management of “Miyagi” Tours and Travel will check the whole data in the end of month. Everything that goes out and comes in has to be entered including the ticket sale and the cash money of the tickets itself.

The data is not also about ticket sales but it is also about the other fees such as gasoline, parking fee and others. All of these have to be saved as the note of “Miyagi” Tours and Travel.

Chapter III

The Terminology and Explanation Related to the Company

3.1     The Explanation of Ticket Colors

In this case, I use the ticket from Lion Air as an example. As a worker of ticket agencies, this kind of ticket has to be understood. While performing the job training in “Miyagi” Tours and Travel, I have been introduced the meaning of the colors where there are four colors in the ticket itself.

Here every color will be explained. The first color is green. Take a look of this green ticket sample below;

Green Ticket

As written on the ticket, AUDIT, it means that the ticket must be brought or delivered to the Lion ticket management. This is a proof where the ticket is actually reserved by a customer. From this ticket, the Lion ticket management will know the sum of money paid and the payment will be done in BII bank after checking the ticket. The next color of the ticket is brown. The following is the sample of ticket which is brown;

Brown Ticket

The sample of ticket above will be used for flight. This is a ticket which must be held by a person who reserves the ticket. When doing a travel by plane, every passenger will be checked whether they have brought their tickets or not and this ticket will be shown as a proof that they have already had the ticket. Then the ticket in lightseagreen will be used for control. This is a reserve for an agent to anticipate the passenger carelessness in holding the ticket. This can happen where the holders probably forget or lose their ticket and they can ask for the agent where they reserve the ticket. Take a look of the ticket sample below;

LightseaGreen Ticket

The last ticket is in pink. This is a ticket that will be left in an agent. This ticket will be reported and written down as a proof of tickets sold. Every time tickets sold will be recorded and this kind of tickets will be the one that will be saved in an agent. Here is the sample of the ticket which is pink;

Pink Ticket

3.1  What it NATO Alphabet?

The NATO phonetic alphabet, more formally the international radiotelephony spelling alphabet, is the most widely used spelling alphabet (Wikipedia). This is mostly used when someone wants to reserve a ticket, flight ticket. In a call, sometimes, it is not clear to hear the name of someone and therefore, the effective way to write the name is by mentioning NATO Alphabet.

As far as I know, the people who will book a ticket have already known what the NATO Alphabet is. Here is the example of missing name in a call or conversation;

Customer    : Morning…!! I would like to reserve a ticket, Jogja – Jakarta, is the ticket available?

Agent          : Sure, your name please?

Customer    : Well, Maryl Ms

Agent          : Sorry? Is it Mike, Echo, Romeo, India, Lima?

Customer    : No, it is Mike, Alpha, Romeo, Yankee, Lima

Agent          : Ouch…sorry, Maryl, here I am booking your ticket.

Customer    : Thank you

The above conversation is the example of using NATO Alphabet and most flight has used this kind of terminology. The following table is the NATO Alphabet which is mostly used by agencies.

C Charlie K Kilo T Tango
D Delta L Lima U Uniform
E Echo M Mike V Victor

Q Quebec Z Zulu

3.3  The Abbreviations of Cities

In a flight or issuing the tickets, the route of destination has to be shortened. There are some abbreviations that are used in a flight. I have taken the example of issuing the tickets from Lion Air. This abbreviation can be looked at the ticket sample above that has been issued or the route in chapter II on the table.

For further explanation of the abbreviations of cities – it is actually not a city but it tends to the airport in a city –, I have written them on the following table;
